Yohan Blake, the Jamaican sprinter started his 2012 Olympic warm-up with a win at a Lucerne meet. Timing 9.85 seconds, Blake won the 100 meters race ahead of his Jamaican compatriot Michael Frater. Earlier, 22 years Blake had gone past Usain Bolt twice in Jamaican Olympic trials at Kingston with a record time of 9.75 to 100 meters and a leading timing of 19.80 seconds in 200 meters.

Blake is the fourth fastest man in the history of 100 meters sprints, following Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, and Asafa Powell. In 2011 World Championships, with two Gold medals in 100 meters and 400 meters sprints, Blake registered himself as a well-deserved contender for Olympic Gold. Playing alongside Usain at the Racers Track Club of Jamaica, Blake has bettered himself over the years.

After the Lucerne meet, Blake himself admitted that though he had not come to run a quick time, with a leading 9.85 before Olympics, he is happy to be on the right path. While talking about his pre-Olympics preparations and performances, Blake lightly mentioned his famous nickname of ‘The Beast’, given by training partner Bolt.

Such movements of Blake are going to make the shorter versions of sprints more and more interesting in 2012 London Olympics. Here, it is important to note that Yohan Blake, Usain Bolt, and Justine Gatlin will have to be in a strong fight over picking the Gold this time.

Usain Bolt, the three times Olympic champion who is also known as the ‘Lightning Bolt’ still holds a record of 9.58 seconds in 100 meters and 19.19 seconds in 200 meters sprints. This 25-year-old 2008 Beijing Gold medalist is also eying a 4th Olympic Gold.

Similarly, Justine Gatlin, the 2004 Olympics Gold medalist has also amused Olympics followers by finishing a 100 meters sprint in just 9.80 seconds this season. Coming back strong from a four years ban after tested positive against a forbidden drug; Gatlin has shown his potential to win another Olympic Gold.
